MISSION
The Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics at LLNL is a branch of the University of California systemwide IGPP, a Multi-Campus Research Unit focusing primarily on extraterrestrial materials, astrophysics and geophysics. IGPP serves as an interface between unique LLNL facilities, personnel and capabilities and the broader academic community. The mission of the IGPP branch of LLNL is to perform world-class science, leveraging state-of-the-art LLNL capabilities, while attracting and retaining scientific talent relevant to Laboratory programs.

RESEARCH AREAS

imageAstrophysics
The LLNL Astrophysics Research Center manages the astrophysics part of the University Collaborative Research Program (UCRP) and facilitates contacts between UC scientists and their LLNL counterparts. The Astrophysics Research Center also serves as the focus of astrophysics activities at LLNL by organizing the weekly astrophysics colloquium, by hosting visitors and collaborators, by editing an annual Observatory Report that covers all astrophysics activities at LLNL (and is published in the Bulletin of the American Astronomical Society), and by providing various other service functions.

imagePlanetary Sciences
The IGPP Planetary Sciences Research Center, headed by Lars Borg, serves the aims of the IGPP-LLNL in the area of geosciences. This includes managing the geosciences part of the Minigrants program facilitating contacts between UC faculty and students and their LLNL counterparts. The Geosciences Research Center also participates in activities at LLNL by organizing the colloquia, by hosting visitors and collaborators, and organizing workshops. The staff and post- doctoral researchers of the Geosciences Research Center carry out a significant program of research in earth and planetary science as well as analytical astromaterials research on meteorites, micrometeorites, interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), and Stardust samples.
